Watercress

Juicy Trivia

An ancient green that was said to have been a staple in Roman soldiers diets, watercress is actually a part of the cruciferous (also known as brassica) family of vegetables along with kale, broccoli, arugula and Brussels sprouts.

Jason Says...

Watercress is extremely high in chlorophyll which helps to build healthy red blood cells. It is packed with minerals so is great for mineral deficiencies. Good for any detox program.

Juice or Smoothie?

Juice: Watercress gives a refreshing distinctive flavour. It works well with cucumber and celery and it's very potent so you only need a small handful. As with any leafy greens, if you're using a centrifugal juicer, make sure you pack the leaves in tight between the other harder produce.

Juicy Benefits

Detoxifies the blood and warms and stimulates the system. Aids digestion. May be helpful for those prone to kidney stones, arthritis, gout, rheumatism, eczema and psoriasis. The inorganic mineral compounds in watercress of iridium and rhodium protect against cancer. Helps clear catarrh in chest infections.

Research

Scientific research from the University of Southampton has revealed that a plant compound in watercress may have the ability to suppress breast cancer cell development by 'turning off' a signal in the body and thereby starving the growing tumour of essential blood and oxygen.
