Ever wondered why cutting onions make you cry when you chop them? An enzyme called Lachrymatory-factor synthase, is released into the air once the surface of onion is cut into and causes the teary reaction.

During the American civil war in 1864 General Ulysses S. Grant wired a directive to the war department to save his troops who were suffering from dysentery “I will not move my army without onions!” Three trainloads arrived the following day!

A cohort study led by Dorant E for ‘The Department of Epidemiology, University of Limburg’, Maastricht, The Netherlands. Started in 1986 with 120,852 men and women ranging in age from 55 to 69 years and concluded there was evidence for a strong inverse association between onion consumption and stomach carcinoma incidence.

Compounds from onion have been reported to have a range of health benefits, which include anti-carcinogenic properties, anti-platelet activity, anti-thrombotic activity, anti-asthmatic and antibiotic effects.
