Pineapple

Juicy Trivia

Once harvested, pineapples don't continue to ripen and they have already reached their full sweetness. Choose pineapples that look fresh, have green leaves and are slightly soft to the touch. Each round scale on a pineapple is actually a small fruit that fused with all the others as it grew!

Jason Says...

This deliciously sweet fruit works very well with both vegetables and fruit to produce a satisfying juice. Pineapples contain an enzyme called bromelain which has an amazing ability to dissolve mucus, so is really helpful with people who suffer with asthma and hay fever.

Juice or Smoothie?

Juice: Pineapples make a beautifully thick and creamy juice. For the longevity of your juicer it's best to peel, cut into buttons and then feed through the chute. Frozen pineapple can also be used if fresh is unavailable.

Juicy Benefits

The vitamin C in pineapple may help lower your risk for heart disease, gout, cancer, lead toxicity, cataracts and stroke. It also provides a boost to your immune function, helping to shorten the duration of colds. The vitamin may also help to prevent high blood pressure and diabetes, according to the Linus Pauling Institute.

Research

Bromelain may boost overall immune strength in the human body. One German clinical study of 16 breast cancer patients found that oral supplementation of bromelain could help stimulate immune function in women. Other studies suggest that it may also boost the amount of certain immune system hormones, called cytokines (made in our white blood cells). Recent studies suggest that bromelain may help relieve some of the standard cancer side effects related to lowered immunity.
