Raspberry
Juicy Trivia
Raspberry leaves can be used to make a tea with medical properties. Drinking raspberry leaf tea has been proven to aid digestive and gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhoea, acid build up, heartburn and cramps. This is because this tea has anti-acid effects on the body which can help relieve a great number of problems.
Jason Says...
These little beauties are truly a super fruit. They contain 50% higher antioxidant activity than strawberries, three times that of kiwis and ten times that of tomatoes. This makes them a must for anti ageing and great skin!
Juice or Smoothie?
Smoothie: They blend well on their own or with other berries or bananas. Add some live yogurt for a delicious creamy smoothie. Frozen raspberries can be used if you can't get them fresh.
Juicy Benefits
Raspberries are the richest source of ellagitannin which the body converts into ellagic acid. Ellagic acid activates detoxifying enzymes in the liver, resulting in the clearing of cancer causing substances in the serum. It can also prevent carcinogens from attaching to cellular DNA and stimulate the immune system to effectively fight cancer cells and triggers apoptosis (self-destruction of cancerous cells) .
Antioxidant properties found in the red raspberry help to protect cell membranes from damage from free radicals. Ellagic acid is not the only antioxidant found in raspberries. These tiny fruits also contain quercetin and anthocyanins, which contribute to their ability to offer protection from bacteria and fungi in the system,
Can aid weight loss
Promotes good health and protects against cancer
Helps to maintain healthy and glowing skin
Research
Recent studies suggest that the anti-cancer benefits of raspberries may extend beyond their basic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory aspects. Phytonutrients in raspberries may also be able to change the signals that are sent to potential or existing cancer cells. In the case of existing cancer cells, phytonutrients like ellagitannins in raspberries may be able to decrease cancer cell numbers by sending signals that encourage the cancer cells to being a cycle of programmed cell death (apoptosis). This signalling is likely to involve activity of the p53 protein that is typically classified as a tumour suppressor protein.
In the case of potentially but not yet cancerous cells, phytonutrients in raspberries may be able to trigger signals that encourage the non-cancerous cells to remain non-cancerous. The role of the a protein complex called nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB) is likely to be involved in this set of events.
