Lime
Juicy Trivia
Limes were thought to originate in South East Asia. They were introduced into Egypt and Northern Africa around the 10th century and Spain in the 13th century, where they were spread throughout southern Europe during the Crusades. Like the lemon it is thought that limes arrived in the New world with Columbus in 1493.
Centuries later, vitamin C rich limes, like lemons were used to prevent scurvy among sailors on board British ships, earning them the nickname ‘limey’, a word that is still used today for as a slang term for someone British.
